View Documentary, “Perception: From Prison To Purpose”

Please join us on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 to view the documentary, "Perception: From Prison to Purpose" featuring former Hope Partnership youth, Noah Schultz.

Noah, a graduate of the Hope Partnership program, served 7.5 years in the custody of the Oregon Youth Authority (OYA). According to Noah, the film shows that any kid is capable of committing a crime. "Usually a decision to commit a crime is a manifestation of a lot of hurt from one’s past. By sharing my own story, I tried to help viewers understand how these kids end up in correctional facilities. Given the right resources, they can change their trajectory."

While at the MacLaren Correctional Facility, Noah received two Bachelor of Arts degrees. He also participated in our Hope Partnership Program, taking advantage of every program offered to transform his life. His documentary traces his path from gang activity and incarceration to being a mentor and role model determined to change the world for the better. Since his release in October 2016, he has become an outspoken youth advocate, with a passion to drive reform in our justice system, inspiring hope, action and humanizing the stories of the incarcerated.

The event is from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the Guild Mortgage Co., 1953 NW Kearney St., Portland. Noah will kick off the viewing and will be available for questions. Appetizers and refreshments will be served and parking is available on site. Thank you to Mast Collaborative and Portland Development Solutions for catering and to Janus Board Member, Dave Jarman, for the wine donation. Event is free and open to the public.

Visit The Sharing Tree at Washington Square Mall & Look for Janus Youth With the Red Dot on Gift Tag

The Sharing Tree at Washington Square Mall is a great way to make sure each of our youth has a gift to open on Christmas morning. Just pick an ornament from the tree located in the Nordstrom wing, near Williams-Sonoma and purchase the item listed on the tag. These gifts are distributed to Janus and eight other charities throughout the Portland metro area. Each year, more than 4,500 gifts are given to those in need through the Washington Square Sharing Tree.

Ending Youth Homelessness

Every night, our downtown Portland shelters are home to youth ages 16-24 who have no other place to go. Youth often line up outside the door at 8:30 pm, hoping to get a bed and a meal for the night. Not everyone gets in. With a limit of 60 beds, the shelter can only accommodate 60 youth each night. During the winter months, there are an additional 10 beds. This year alone, the shelters housed and fed over 500 youth. While our shelters are running at full capacity and our street outreach workers are out every night providing warm clothing and crisis-intervention services, there are some positive shifts affecting the numbers and demographics of homeless youth in Multnomah County.
